Headed to the 2017 National 4-H Shooting Sports Invitational

The 2017 West Virginia 4-H Air Rifle Team, will feature one 4-H member from Wayne County, Zane Smith and two coaches – Bruce Crockett and Jesse Smith. The team also includes 4-H members from Monroe and Wood counties. Together, they will represent the state at the National 4-H Shooting Sports Invitational in Grand Island, Nebraska June 25-30, 2017. Expenses associated with a trip to the National Invitational include transportation, hotel, meals and equipment needs. The estimated total cost for the three individuals from Wayne County to attend this national competition for 5 days plus two travel days will be approximately $4,500.

Highlights about the 4-H Shooting Sports Program

The West Virginia 4-H Shooting Sports Program strives to build life skills in youth nine years and older. The program provides the following life skills.
• teaches decision making, teamwork, self-discipline, self-confidence, and problem solving;
• promotes the highest standards of safety, sportsmanship, and ethical behavior;
• encourages an appreciation and understanding of natural resources;
• develops leadership abilities;
• builds character and willingness to assume citizenship responsibility;
• furnishes enjoyable, positive relationships with peers and adult instructors;
• strengthens families through participation in lifelong recreational activities;
• builds awareness of related career opportunities.

The Wayne County 4-H Shooting Sports Program has been operating since 2005. It is under the direction of Head Coach Bruce Crockett with the support of 15 other 4-H volunteers and parents. It currently has 25 active members. The program is volunteer-led and financially supported through the efforts of fundraising events throughout the year.

In 2008, 2011, 2012 and 2014, the Wayne County 4-H Shooting Sports program sent teams to the National Invitational. A copy of our tax exempt form is provided for your records for any contribution you may make.

2018 Wayne County 4-H Air Rifle Invitational

This annual event will be held in early January 2018. More details will be forthcoming later this year.

Rules & Guidelines

This 4-H event is open to all county Senior and Junior youth. Senior contestants must have passed their 14th birthday and may not have passed their 19th birthday as of January 1, 2017. Junior contestants must not have passed their 14th birthday on or before January 1 of the current 4-H year. Both Senior and Junior Teams are composed of 3 or 4 individuals. The high three scores for the day will count toward the team score. If there are 4 members to a team, the low score for the day will be dropped.

Counties are responsible for: travel, meals, lodging, and insurance for their leaders and youth. Please bring health forms for all contestants and leaders and if media release forms are not secured, please indicate this on the Registration Form.
